Greater celandine (Chelidonium majus):
Therapeutic actions: Anodyne,
anti-inflammatory, antiviral, cholagogue, choleretic, mild laxative,
purgative, spasmolytic, vulnerary (topical). (Mills & Bone, 2000,
p. 335) (Hoffmann, 2002. p. 59)
Phytochemical constituents that enhance these:
- Berberine - cholagogue, choleretic, increases bilirubin excretion. (Mills & Bone, 2000, p. 288 & 336)
- Chelerythrine - antimicrobial. (Mills & Bone, 2000, p. 336)
- Chelidonine. (Mills & Bone, 2000, p. 336)
Supporting evidence: Uncontrolled
human trials using a Chelidonium extract have shown evidence of
improvement in biliary diseases such as cholecystitis (without stones),
cholelithiasis and cholangitis. (Mills & Bone, 2000. p. 338) Chelerythrine
has been found to have significant antimicrobial effect against gram
positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus, and
the fungus Candida albicans. (Mills & Bone, 2000. p. 336) |
